Background of the Study
Childhood vaccination is one of the most effective strategies for preventing infectious diseases and reducing child mortality. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2024) emphasizes that immunization has saved millions of lives by protecting children against diseases such as measles, polio, diphtheria, and hepatitis. However, despite nationwide vaccination programs in Nigeria, immunization uptake remains low in certain regions, including Jigawa State, due to parental hesitancy, misinformation, and poor healthcare access (Bello et al., 2023).
Nurse-led health education has been identified as a crucial factor in increasing childhood vaccination rates. Nurses serve as frontline healthcare providers, educating parents on the importance of immunization, addressing misconceptions, and ensuring adherence to vaccination schedules (Ibrahim & Usman, 2024). Studies suggest that when nurses engage in structured vaccination education, there is a higher likelihood of parental compliance, leading to improved immunization coverage (Ahmed et al., 2023).
In Jigawa State, several challenges hinder childhood vaccination, including traditional beliefs, vaccine accessibility, and maternal illiteracy. Nurse-led interventions play a vital role in overcoming these challenges by providing culturally sensitive education and reinforcing the benefits of immunization (Aliyu et al., 2024). However, there is limited research on the direct impact of nurse-led health education on vaccination uptake in Jigawa State, making this study essential for assessing its effectiveness and identifying strategies to enhance immunization rates.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the existence of government immunization programs, vaccine-preventable diseases continue to pose a significant threat to child health in Jigawa State. Low vaccination rates are attributed to a lack of awareness, misinformation, and fear of vaccine side effects (Oladipo & Hassan, 2023). Nurses, as primary healthcare educators, play a critical role in addressing these concerns, yet the effectiveness of their educational efforts in improving vaccine uptake has not been extensively studied.
Previous studies have indicated that targeted health education can significantly improve childhood immunization rates by increasing parental confidence and willingness to vaccinate their children (Eze et al., 2024). However, little is known about how well nurse-led health education programs have been implemented in Jigawa State and their impact on immunization coverage. This study seeks to examine the role of nurses in improving childhood vaccination uptake and propose evidence-based recommendations to enhance immunization strategies.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effectiveness of nurse-led health education in increasing childhood vaccination uptake in Jigawa State.
2. To identify the challenges hindering childhood immunization in Jigawa State.
3. To recommend strategies for improving the impact of nurse-led health education on immunization rates.
Research Questions
1. How effective is nurse-led health education in improving childhood vaccination uptake in Jigawa State?
2. What are the key challenges affecting childhood immunization rates?
3. What strategies can enhance the impact of nurse-led health education on vaccination uptake?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led health education significantly improves childhood vaccination uptake.
2. Parental misconceptions and healthcare accessibility influence childhood immunization rates.
3. Implementing structured nurse-led health education programs enhances vaccine compliance.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on primary healthcare centers in Jigawa State, assessing the impact of nurse-led health education on vaccination uptake. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported vaccination compliance and difficulties in reaching remote communities for data collection.
